Spitalfields

Spitalfields has undergone an amazing renaissance and alongside the street market it now has bars, cafes and an art gallery. It is a lively place with plenty going on both day and night. This is the place where you’ll find true cockneys, people who have lived here all their lives and have many stories to tell.

Tracing its roots back to the 12th century when it was a hospital and priory known as St. Mary's Spital, it became a market and began its recent usage from about 1680 after the Great Fire of London.

Public Life, near Spitalfields is a music venue housed in a converted public toilet under the road. Expect an eclectic mix of broken beats and laptop sets as well as the odd more traditional house based night.

Wandering around you'll find many old houses that haven’t been changed for centuries and others whose owners have seized on the chance to lavish thousands on their restoration to former glories.
